TLS 1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER
·APRIL/MAY 2008 ·

Dear Parents,

It has been our pleasure to work with this class!  They are a very congenial group!  Your help and encouragement has certainly contributed to your child’s success in school.  We urge each parent to KEEP YOUR CHILD READING during the summer months.  Studies have shown that a child can fall back as much as six months if skills learned are not reinforced during the summer.  All children would greatly benefit by completing the Summer Bridge Book Grade 1 to 2 which is available at Learning How in Bel Air.  We now look forward to the spring school activities.  Please check the school calendar, information in the weekly Information Folder, and the 1st grade homework website for announcements.

CURRICULUM

Christian Education:      We will learn more about Jesus’ life and ministry on Earth.  We’ll study the miracles Jesus performed.  We’ll learn about ways to worship and praise God.  We will continue to memorize Bible verses.

Bible Verse:                    Bible verses will come from the New Testament.  Watch for these to come home as handwriting exercises.  You may also access Bible verses on the 1st grade homework website

Reading:                         The pace for both “Friends” and “Pals” will quicken as we work to complete books 4 and 5 of the 1st grade curriculum.  Amigos have completed all required 1st grade readers and are doing enrichment work.  We are extremely pleased with the progress made by each child in the class in the area of reading.  KEEP READING THIS SUMMER!

Well learn more about nouns and verbs.  We’ll learn more about capitalization and punctuation.  Our creative stories are now becoming longer and are very fun to share by reading aloud to the class.

Spelling:                         We will apply and combine reading and spelling skills.  We’ll use consonant clusters (blends) and vowel combinations to help spell
words.

Math:                             We will study addition and subtraction facts to 18, 2-digit addition and subtraction, and column addition with three or more numbers looking for doubles or sums of 10.  SUMMER REVIEW:  Fact families, rapid recall of math facts through 18, counting coins, graphs, and telling time.

Social Studies & Science:
We’ll learn about food groups and our five senses.  We’ll welcome spring and learn about the changes brought about by this season.  We’ll study plants, U.S. geography, and more about maps.  We will learn about drug awareness through I LIKE ME….DRUG FREE.
