TLS 5TH GRADE NEWSLETTER
· APRIL/MAY 2008 ·

Dear Parents,

The third quarter has almost ended and the last quarter will soon begin.  It is amazing how quickly time passes when you’re having fun.  The students have been working diligently, and hopefully their motivation will continue through the end of the school year.  The sixth grade is very near for these students and I feel that they are quite prepared for this big move.  Two field trips have been planned for May.  I will be sending home the details very soon.

CURRICULUM

Christian Education:      Our Old Testament studies will continue with the kings of Israel and the prophets.

Bible Verse:                    The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19:1

Reading:                         We have begun reading the book STEAL AWAY HOME by Lois Ruby.  Comprehension skills have greatly improved and we are working on vocabulary.  In the very near future, the students will begin the last unit in their reading book which is called “Think of It!”  Skills in this unit will include theme, steps in a process, context clues, plot, making judgments, and visualizing.

Language:                      The class will be reviewing sentences and sentence punctuation, capitalization, commas, quotations and quotation marks, and compound and complex sentences.  Writing skills have really improved during the year.  We are constantly reviewing the parts of speech and the students are doing an impressive job.

Spelling:                         We are continuing to learn new words each week.  Trial tests are given on Thursdays, and final tests are given on Fridays.

Math:                             We have recently completed our unit on geometry.  During the fourth quarter, we will study measurement, decimals, ratios, proportions, and percents.

Social Studies & Science:
During the next few weeks, the class will be studying the American Revolution and the United States Constitution.  In science the students will finish Chapter Four, electrical energy, and then we will begin to study our last unit on Earth Science.
